Reading New Queer and Trans Lit as Writers

VIRTUAL
Every other Sunday, 7-8:30 p.m. ET
7/5, 7/19, 8/2, 8/16
Cost: $75

In this seven-week, four-session class, participants will read and discuss a selection of queer and trans literature published within the last few years. This class is designed for writers; we’ll spend each session discussing one book, ending the session with short writing exercises related to the book’s themes and craft strategies.

This iteration’s books:

  • Jordy Rosenberg, Night Night Fawn (2026)

  • Lana Lin, The Autobiography of H. Lan Thao Lam (2025)

  • Violet Allen, Plastic, Prism, Void (2026)

  • Patrick Cottrell, Afternoon Hours of a Hermit (2026)

Each of these texts is a study in voice and genre—and an example of the bold new approaches that many queer and trans writers are bringing to contemporary narrative. In his darkly comic novel Night Night Fawn, Jordy Rosenberg brazenly inhabits the point of view of a character modeled after his transphobic late mother. In her critical update to Gertrude Stein’s “autobiography” of her partner Alice B. Toklas, Lana Lin adopts her own partner’s voice to narrate a memoir organized around their decades-long love. A similarly enduring love takes trans-dimensional form in Violet Allen’s debut novel Plastic, Prism, Void, a genre-exploding and exuberantly font-happy romantasy. And with his second novel, the absurdist detective story Afternoon Hours of a Hermit, Patrick Cottrell essentially reinvents his first novel (sort of).

Participants should read Night Night Fawn before the first session.

The cost of this class is $75, and payment is due upon registration.  You can pay me via Venmo (at M-Milks) or via Paypal. I'll be in touch with you within 2 days after receiving your registration info and payment to confirm your spot and provide logistical details for joining the class.
